The residence permit renewal can be started up to 90 days before the expiry date and must be submitted at least 30 days before expiry. The process is done online via the portal portal-renovacoes.aima.gov.pt: register with your permit number and NIF, pay the fee via DUC (Documento Único de Cobrança) within 24 hours, and upload the required documents.
Required documents include: valid passport; current residence permit; NIF and NISS; updated proof of address (registered rental contract or property deed); proof of tax and social security compliance; and criminal record search authorisation. Additionally by category: for D7 — proof of continued passive income; for D8 — updated remote work contract and recent bank statements; for D1 — current employment contract and recent payslips; for D4 — enrolment and attendance proof.
The legal decision deadline is 60 days. After approval, the digital approval certificate (with QR code) is issued online and the card sent by post. The AIMA renewal payment receipt is valid for 180 days as proof of status while waiting. The renewal fee is approximately €121 — always check the current amount at aima.gov.pt.
Start the renewal as early as possible — AIMA delays can be significant.
