The D4 visa covers residence for study, student exchange, scientific research, professional internship and volunteering in Portugal. The fundamental requirement is an acceptance letter or proof of enrolment at a recognised Portuguese higher education institution, or a research protocol with a recognised scientific institution.
Financially, you must show sufficient means of subsistence: a scholarship certificate (Portuguese Government scholars are exempt from other financial proof), a letter of financial responsibility from a family member, or proof of own income. Health insurance for the full period is mandatory. The consular fee is €90 (exempt for scholarship holders). VFS Global processing takes 60–90 days.
Doctoral and post-doctoral students affiliated with a recognised research institution may qualify for the D3 (highly qualified) route instead, which offers consular fee exemption and more favourable conditions. D4 visa holders may work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during the academic term, which helps cover living costs.
Confirm the specific requirements of your institution and consulate before applying.
