The D7 visa is for non-EU citizens with regular passive income sufficient to live in Portugal without local employment: retirees, landlords, dividend or royalty recipients, and others with recurring income. In 2026 the minimum income is €920/month for the main applicant, plus 50% per dependent adult and 30% per dependent minor child.

Key documents include: proof of regular income (bank statements for the last 3–6 months, tax returns or rental contracts), health insurance, proof of accommodation in Portugal, and an apostilled criminal record certificate. The application is submitted in person at VFS Global in your country of residence. The consulate has 30–60 days to decide, though high-demand posts can take up to 4 months.

After arriving in Portugal, the visa holder books an AIMA appointment to formalise the residence permit. The realistic total timeline (consulate application to card in hand) is 6 to 12 months. The first permit is valid for 2 years, renewable for 3-year periods. After 5 years of continuous legal residence you may apply for permanent residence; naturalisation timelines are 7 years (EU/CPLP) or 10 years (all others) under Organic Law 1/2026.

Rules and amounts change frequently. Always confirm the latest figures before starting the process.
