The D8 visa is for remote workers employed by non-Portuguese entities — or freelancers with international clients — who want to live in Portugal while working remotely. The income requirement is substantially higher than other categories: €3,680/month (4× the 2026 minimum wage), plus 50% per dependent adult and 30% per dependent minor child.
Proof of remote work is critical: an employment contract with a foreign entity, or service contracts with international clients, supported by bank statements or payment receipts for the last 3 months. Applications with highly variable income or backed only by platform payments without formal contracts are frequently refused. Health insurance, criminal record certificate, valid passport and proof of accommodation are also required.
Since April 2026, all applications are submitted in person at VFS Global. The residence permit is valid for 2 years and renewable, requiring maintenance of the income threshold and proof of continued remote activity. Holders may benefit from the IFICI tax scheme (incentive for non-habitual residents). There is a temporary-stay route (up to 1 year) and a residence route (over 1 year).
Income thresholds are reviewed annually. Confirm current figures before applying.
